Our second in a multi-part series on bag designers and labels to watch and buy now
First launched in 1976, Mode Creation Munich (MCM) is hardly what most would consider an “up-and-comer.” Round One hit the U.S. scene in the 80’s; a perfect complement to the label-loving, logo-flashing style. But, as demonstrated by the decades before and those still to come, every trend is replaceable. By the early 90’s, MCM seemed just another victim of fashion’s evolution.Fast forward to New York’s Plaza Hotel, 2008. MCM resurfaces for a celebrity-filled opening bash in celebration of its first U.S. retail location. While the U.S. left MCM in the dust nearly two decades prior, it held on to its luxury status in Europe. Post-renovation, the company unveiled a new name, new owner, and new designers. MCM was ready for Round Two; this time, nailing the understated sophistication, stylish functionality, and toned-down logos women want today.
In 2010, MCM fits this formula so flawlessly; it may just rival the comeback of the spandex legging.
QUALITY Historically inspired by “the art of travel,” Mode Creation Munich’s collections are designed to endure any worldwide excursion. Never failing its legendary German standards, each piece is assembled by a skilled artisan from the highest quality material.
UTILITY The key component of the brand’s longstanding reputation is its signature blend of luxury and functionality. The result is a collection of timeless investment pieces fit for any adventure; from cocktail parties to overseas adventures.EXCLUSIVITY The single U.S. retail location sits in its fashion capital of New York City. Limited selection and growing popularity translate to the value held by each piece; potentially leading to the next Hermès-Birkin-Bag-style waitlist.

DURABILITY With MCM’s high standards of quality comes the promise of durability. Created to meet the needs of frequent travelers, durability is a top priority in designing the brand collectively.
AESTHETICS Varying from basic black, classic styles to the 80’s preferred logo-boasters, there’s sure to be a match to every taste. Borrowing from the classics, each style promises timeless comfort and shape. Swapping color palettes seasonally, from Easter-egg violet to candy-colored red, makes each collection as enticing as the one before.
STORY As if the comeback story were not enough, the woman behind the re-launch, Sung-Joo Kim, has been named on multiple esteemed lists ; including the “20 Most Powerful International Businesswoman,” (Working Woman, 1999) and the “7 most powerful women in Asia,” (Asianweek, 2001). While known for her devotion to humanitarian efforts and women’s leadership, we can’t help but admire her outspoken nature.
