Issey Miyake: Consistent Creativity

Macy’s Glamorama is right around the corner and in homage, we thought we’d explore one of the designers who will be featured in the line up this year.

Issey Miyake's namesake label is often overshadowed by fellow Japanese designer Rei Kawakubo of Comme des Garcons, yet Miyake's body of work is more than substantial and prolific. Born in 1938, Miyake's career has been vigorous and long-lived. Perhaps Miyake’s biggest contribution to fashion has been a process of creating pleating called, Pleats Please—which featured pieces that were cut and sewn and then had pressed into pleats (whereas before the process was to pleat fabric first and then cut pattens). And while Miyake is no longer actively designing, he is still highly involved in the company and "oversees the overall direction of all lines created by his company,” despite his retirement in 1997.[1] And the name Issey Miyake continues to conjure up images of an genuine artist with fashion as his choice medium who intuitively creates garments as abstract and geometrical as they are ephemeral and soft.

A trip down memory lane: past seasons' collections, many designed by Miyake's protégé Dai Fujiwara.
